Understanding The Various Types Of Links - by John Roberts
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
In order to fully understand the fundamentals of link
building it's important that we cover each of the different
types, their roles, why they are used and how they differ.
Once covered, you should have a good grasp on the basic
principles of link building and how to apply each one within
your overall strategy.

Let's start with internal or onsite links.

Internal or Onsite Links

Internal links are typically links that reside on your own
website, however they can be defined in two completely
different ways.

Firstly, internal links may be one of either ;

Links within your websites content pointing to other pages
Navigational links, as in menus and footers etc

Both are very useful in terms of establishing keyword rich
links onsite. These used in conjunction with other methods
of link building, especially offsite links, or backlinks,
become quite powerful in their effectiveness.

External Links

Naturally speaking, external links are links placed on your
own site that point to external locations. These may be links
or websites that you recommend that essentially lead visitors
away from your own site, to those of other websites.

Inbound Links or Backlinks

Inbound links, or backlinks as they are more commonly known,
are links that are placed on other websites that point back
to yours. These essentially are the most powerful types of
links to have, in that, they help to not only drive traffic
to your website, but they usually always give a big boost to
your rankings.

Reciprocal Links

Reciprocal linking is a term that defines link exchanges,
typically between two website owners, or webmasters. Usually
it's a trade off. You link to me, and I'll link to to you.
The effectiveness of this method of link building is
questionable, as it's been heavily debated that with links
pointing both ways they essentially cancel each other out.
I tend not to do a great deal of reciprocal linking myself.

Natural Links

Natural links can be easily defined as links that common web
users, and webmasters share on the web. These whilst very
effective in terms of improving rankings, can often be
difficult to obtain, as you're depending on users actively
sharing your content. Certainly, natural links shared amongst
users on the web are some of the best links to come by but
the whole process is extremely slow.

Forced Links

Forced links are those that are most commonly found on web
2.0 sharing sites, social bookmarking sites, and article
directory sites. Forced links are often links that are placed
with intention as way of promotion via the website owner or
seo consultant themselves in an effort to raise awareness of
a site, and to help improve a sites rankings.

Paid Links

The debate over paid links is one that is always ongoing.
Without going into too many details about my own personal
thoughts on paid links, you must understand that if you
decide to engage in the practice of buying and selling links,
then you run the risk of potential penalties to your site as
a result.

The issue is however is that paid links can be very effective,
especially when purchasing links from websites with high page
rank and authority. At the end of the day, it comes down to
personal choice. Do the risks involved with doing so outweigh
the potential returns?

There are however ways to purchase links and still be within
search engine guidelines. This is achievable by using the
nofollow tag, which is the most common way, or redirecting
the links to an intermediate page that is blocked from search
engines with a robots.txt file.

Google in particular stipulates the usage of the nofollow tag
for paid links as part of its guidelines.

Understanding the differences between link types and how they
are used, is a fundamental part of learning search engine
optimization.
