Marketing With Articles: Create and Be Found? - by Steve Shaw

I was watching television recently and a commercial came on
for a service that makes it easy to create your own website.
Their catch phrase was something like:

"Create and be found"

The tagline is catchy, but a little deceptive. It sends the
impression that all you need to do to "be found" online is
to create a website. Any of you who have a website know that
it's not quite that simple. You need to market your website
in order to "be found" by the people in your target market.

When you've just created your website and you are thinking
about marketing with articles, I know there's an initial
learning curve. It's not just about learning how to write
and submit articles. Many times there is an initial confusion
as to what in the world you should be shooting for, what is a
measurement of success, and why it's worth your effort to try
to market your site at all.

Here are 2 questions that reveal very common areas of confusion
with people who are new to article marketing:

1 - What does it mean for people to find your website on the
internet?

You have created a website, but until you start marketing it
no one will know that it's there.

Who is your website for? It's for people who could use your
services or products but who don't know who you are yet. These
are your "target customers". When these people have a need for
someone who provides services or products such as yours, they
will go to a search engine such as Google, Yahoo, Bing or one
of the others, and they will type in words that express their
need.

When your target customers search for things associated with
your niche, your goal is for your website to appear at the top
of the results lists, preferably in the #1 position. Your
target customers will most likely click on one of the web
pages listed at the top of the results list. The #1 website
usually gets the bulk of the clicks.

So, this is what it means for people to find your site on the
internet: People who don't know who you are, but who are
potential customers of your business, type searches into
Google and the other search engines, and then they click
on your website in the results list.

2 - What should you be trying to rank for--your name or
business name, or something else?

In that commercial I saw for the website creation service,
they showed a person creating a business website and then
going to a search engine and searching for the name of the
business. They were thrilled to see that their website held
the top ranking when someone searched for their business
name.

This is actually not what you should be going for when
marketing your website.

Think about it--if a person already knows the name of your
business or your name and they are specifically searching
for you and trying to get to your specific website, then
that person already knows who you are. They might have met
you at a conference or heard about you from a different
source.

It's great that they can search for your business name and
find your website in Google, but that won't lead to a massive
influx of traffic, and that's actually not what website
marketing is about.

When you do article marketing, your goal is for your website
to be found by people who don't know your business even exists.

When people go to Google and the other search engines to get
information, they are usually only aware of their own need,
not the exact website that can offer them a solution. So,
they do a search in Google, and then they see a list of web
pages ranked in order with the web pages at the top being
most likely to have the information that they're looking for.

If your website can be at the top of the results list for
the phrases that your target customers are searching for,
then there can be a lot of website visitors coming your way.
In fact, the web page that's in the #1 spot receives about
8.5 times the traffic as the web page in the #5 position.

That's a significant difference--it's the difference between
getting 1,000 visitors a month and 8,500. To drive it home
even further, it's the difference between 5,000 visitors a
month and 42,500.

Now, you're starting to get an idea as to why website owners
are so intent on marketing their websites and getting a higher
search engine ranking!

When you're starting to do article marketing you'll hear a
lot of terms thrown around that are unfamiliar to you. People
talk about being ranked #1 or "being found" on the internet.
Now you know what they're talking about, what you should be
shooting for, and the reward that is in store for the people
who are consistent with their article marketing efforts.
