What is a Landing Page Anyway? - by Valentin Dem

It is so frustrating to spend time and a lot of money on
getting a "Landing Page" developed that is an abysmal flop
and customers click through because of the various problems
with the page, rather than staying on and getting more
information. Make sure that appropriate research on what
it takes to create a successful page is done before ever
tackling the effort to produce one. There are Three Rules
of Successful Landing Pages that new developers need to
understand:

Rule #1: Appropriate Headline

One mistake many people make when creating a "Landing Page"
the first time is to write a headline that is irrelevant to
the product or service being promoted -- don't try to be cute
with a gimmicky headline, instead make it appropriate to the
service. Use action words that affect emotional reactions to
get the visitor interested in continuing and use a clean font
that is very easy to read.

Remember that the heading is what visitors see first when
they get on the site, and there's just a few seconds to
capture their attention where they decide to stay on the
page and learn more, or find a better site that gives the
product information they want.

Rule #2: Advantages

Identifying the advantages and benefits of the targeted product
or event are very important. Just don't mix up the features
ofthe product with the advantages, because these are two
different things. Always highlight the benefits on the "Landing
Page" and it's best to put them in bullet form instead of long
paragraphs.

Remember that if they can't quickly scan the page and quickly
identify the benefits that are important to them, they tend to
leave to find another product or event that gives them what
they want in a glance.

Rule #3: Be Professional

Unless the web site is targeted to children, such as tickets
to a children's event, it needs to be very clean and
professional looking. Proofread. Proofread. Proofread. And
then proofread again. Misspelled words indicate a sloppy
organization which turns customers away. Don't use more than
two fonts, more than three colors (which doesn't apply to
pictures), and keep the background clean without a lot of
colors.

If the "Landing Page" is targeting a product, it's helpful to
put a picture on the product on the page so that the visitor
sees the product they are seeking. A professional page reflects
on the professionalism of the company the visitors are looking
for when seeking a product or service.

The most important Three Rules of Successful Landing Pages is
to create a page that is interesting to visitors and gets them
to continue on to find out more information or provide contact
information.
