Google's PPC Boom good news for BT - by Caitlin Joel Smythe
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Google's share price soared late on Friday, up a miraculous
25 per cent from its low point of the day, as online earnings
proved resilient against suffering global advertising markets.
Their profit rose 26 per cent, to 1.35 billion US Dollars,
which is significantly higher than what analysts predicted,
and their sales jumped a whopping 31 per cent, to 5.54 billion
US Dollars.

Google executives forecast that their "pay per click" service
-- arguably Google's most robust revenue- generating sector
-- would best negotiate the first backlash of the recession,
in which a number of businesses chose to cut marketing costs
as a misguided ‘precaution' against economic uncertainty.
However, pay per click ads appeal to advertisers because they
reach the top layer of customers ready to buy; the results can
be measured; and those who pay can adapt their campaigns
depending on the depths they are willing to take their
products to -- according to Google executives.

"As marketing budgets are being squeezed, targeted ads are
becoming more valuable to advertisers," said Eric Schmidt,
chief executive. He added that Google was benefitting in the
downturn as consumers turned to search engines to research
for bargains -- a phenomenon that Google executives called
"the Wal-Mart effect", which refers to a whole range of
economic impacts resulting from Wal-Mart's business choices
throughout its 40-year reign in the US. Google's performance
in 2008 suggests it could end the year on a strong note in
spite of a general downturn in consumer spending in the US.

Another service stands behind pay per click advertising in
the form of behavioural targeting, which seeks to match
users to categories online by looking at domains, search
queries or keywords on the page visited in real time, thus
serving ads that are effective and applicable so that
advertisers know who is looking at their pages.

Firms such as http://www.nebuad.com/solutions/ and
http://www.nebuad.com/solutions/ are hard at work testing
and perfecting their ad-serving platforms, reaching out
not just to a sector of searchers who are ready to buy
products and services online, but to all demographics
that exhibit quantifiable search characteristics. Of
course, none of the information is stored, and it's all
performed in real time. Most importantly, online ad-serving
platforms work on an

basis.
