(Secrets of Affiliate Link Cloaking Revealed!)

Warning: The techniques you are about to hear are the actual
techniques used by cloaking companies that they do not want
you to hear.

:: Firstly, why cloak?

When I first heard about cloaking techniques I always had this
image in my head of a space ship that could turn invisible with
the press of a button -

"Captain, we're under fire! No problems, go to full cloaking!"
All of a sudden the ship would disappear from radar, and they
were home free.

While these images may be a regurgitation of my misspent
childhood, cloaking techniques are real, and they are used
heavily by professional affiliate marketers today. However,
when you ask people what it is and what it does, no one
really seems to have an answer. Until now!

When you promote an affiliate program, you're given a unique
tracking code that tracks all sales resulting from your lead.
It is the tracking code that gives you the credit for the sale.
For example, your affiliate link looks similar to "domainname.com/t.cgi?id=1234567". The numbered ID at the end
of the link is your affiliate code, and as you can see, is
very easy to change. It is scarily common for people to either
remove the tracking code completely, or to even replace your
tracking code with their own, meaning either way you DO NOT
get credit for the sale! Cloaking hides the affiliate link,
guaranteeing that you receive full credit for any sales made.
In short, secured link good, insecure link bad.

:: Let's first deal with the most common type - URL Cloaking.

URL cloaking is exactly that - hiding the actual URL of the
website. How is this done? This is a simple technique performed
by the use of frames. A webpage frame is very similar to a
picture frame - You take your picture, you put it in a frame –
what do you have? You have a frame, and inside this frame you
can see your original picture.

This is exactly what happens with URL cloaking - your take the
affiliate website, and you put it inside your own frame, meaning
all of a sudden the true source of the website is hidden, and
your affiliate tracking code is secure. So instead of having
the affiliate URL visible and prone to hacking in the address
bar of your browser, the name of your frame is displayed instead.

Then we take it one step further - for the curious of hearts,
after opening the source code of the page, you can read the
URL of the original website in the code. It's for this reason
that the URL is then encoded using it's hexadecimal value,
rather than the English version that you and me can read.
Internet Browser software on the other hand, has no problems
decoding the hexadecimal values, and hey presto, your URL
cloaking is complete!

We'll cover the pro's and con's of this technique shortly.

:: The second type of affiliate security is a redirection technique.

This is a relatively simple technique in theory, but implementing
tt yourself can be a little tricky. Basically, instead of
advertising your affiliate link, you advertise a second link
that will then redirect the user to the correct and intact
affiliate link. This stops people from removing the tracking
code of the advertised link. This is very handy when it comes
to email advertising especially!

How does redirection work? Very easily - You direct the user to
your redirection page. In the source code of this page, there
is some JavaScript code that simply palms the user off and sends
them to the correct affiliate link, your tracking code intact!


:: To Cloak, or to Secure - that is the question!

Let's compare:

Cloaking - Pro's
  * Stops the user from ever seeing the original affiliate URL

Cloaking - Con's
  * Affects search engine rankings
  * Some websites cannot be framed

Secure Redirection - Pro's
  * Stops the user from modifying the tracking code
  * Does not affect search engine rankings
  * Works with ALL websites

Secure Redirection - Con's
  * The true identity of the user's website will eventually be
readable

So which technique is better? It all depends on the affiliate
website, and so you'll need a service that offers both
techniques.

:: Okay, I need it, but how do you Cloak or Secure my links?

These techniques can be done yourself if you own your own website,
and know how to program in JavaScript. However this is time
consuming, and not everyone owns a website. A service such as
